Fenton High School Wins LifeSmarts State Title

OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. - March 4, 2014 - PRLog -- Better Business Bureau Serving Eastern Michigan (BBB) today announced that a team from Fenton High School won the 4th annual Michigan State LifeSmarts Challenge held at Oakland University on February 27, 2014. LifeSmarts (http://lifesmarts.org/) is a national consumereducation competition that challenges teens in grades 9 - 12 with questions about personal finance, health and safety, the environment, technology, and consumer rights and responsibilities and is a program of the National Consumers League. In Michigan, the LifeSmarts program is sponsored by Better Business Bureau Serving Eastern Michigan.

After completing three months of preparation and a LifeSmarts online competition, the seven top scoring teams were chosen to compete in a full day, ‘Quiz Bowl’ event, fielding questions about real-life marketplace issues. The State competition consisted of several head-to-head matches in which the teams were quizzed on the information they have learned throughout the year. This year, the final round was moderated by Emmy Award winning anchor & reporter, JoAnne Purtan (http://www.wxyz.com/about-us/staff/joanne-purtan) who co-anchors the WXYZ Action News at noon and 5 pm. As WXYZ’s “Don't Waste Your Money” Consumer Reporter, Ms. Purtan was an ideal host for this competition.

The teams that competed at the state level this year included teams from: Fenton High School, Clio High School, Kearsley High School and Cranbrook Schools. This year's winning team, Fenton High School, will represent Michigan at the National LifeSmarts Competition in Orlando, Florida.

The State competition was generously supported by BBB Accredited Business, Wesley Berry Florists (http://www.bbb.org/eastern-michigan/business-reviews/flor...), who provided funding to assist the winning team with travel expenses. Also, BBB Accredited Business, Quick Trophy (http://www.bbb.org/eastern-michigan/business-reviews/trop...) provided individual and team trophies for the top three teams. In addition, Oakland University (https://www.oakland.edu/) donated use of a banquet room for the competition.
