Fixed: The iPhone App to Fight Your Parking Tickets

The only thing more aggravating than a parking ticket, is the time it takes to fight them. “People pay to avoid the headache, or the time off of work, but it’s simply wrong. Parking tickets are given all the time to innocent people.” says co-founder David Hegarty.

Initially available in San Francisco, Fixed addresses the pain of an unjust parking ticket felt by motorists who were on the receiving end of over 1.5M tickets the SF MTA handed out last year. The SF MTA makes it so hard to contest tickets that less than 5% were contested last year, but when people did contest, their win rate was pretty good at over a third.

The much anticipated app has organically received coverage in many of the top media outlets including CNN, NPR, FoxNews, CBS, and The Atlantic. How fed up are users with the current system? Fixed had to put an on-boarding waitlist system in place to manage the demand. The waitlist has swelled to over 25K users.

“We didn’t intend to pre-announce the app, but word got out in early January and since then the phone has been off the hook with interest from both reporters and users. We’re ramping up resources to cope with demand as best we can.” said David Hegarty, one of the co-founders of Fixed.  “I have a car in San Francisco, and I can’t tell you how many times I personally got parking tickets that were completely bogus. Either the signs were missing, or the street paint had worn off. Dealing with parking tickets is a complete pain, and so what happens is people end up paying even if they know they were not at fault. If people park illegally they should get tickets, but it is then the City’s responsibility to make clear and accurate signs and keep them up-to-date. Think of Fixed as fixing your parking tickets, but also fixing the system.”

How exactly does fixed work? “Download the app, take a photo of the ticket and we take care of the rest.”  Fixed has worked with a team of legal researchers and lawyers to pour over the parking regulations and find the most common types of errors.  With this legal knowledge, they believe they can increase the success rate from a one third to fifty percent. If you lose, you don’t pay Fixed a dime. If you win, you pay Fixed 25% of your parking ticket. Plus, you don’t miss a days work. You don’t pay the government hundreds of needless dollars.
