Maple Madness Weekend Getaway in New England

All over the world cultures welcome the coming of spring in different ways. Much to the rest of North America’s benefit, springtime in New England & Canada heralds the arrival of Maple Syrup season.

NEW YORK - Feb. 18, 2014 - PRLog -- Maple syrup production is a time-honored tradition and an important piece of culinary history. Native Americans living in the Northeast were processing maple tree sap as early as 1609, over a decade before Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. Leading up to and during the Civil War, abolitionists would boycott cane sugar and molasses, which were produced from slave labor, in favor of maple syrup and maple sugar. During World War II, New Englanders were encouraged to stretch their sugar rations by substituting in maple sugar and maple syrup, and maple recipe books were printed in abundance as a result.

In New England and Canada today, maple syrup remains an important part not only of culture, but of commerce as well. Up until the 1930s, the United States was the world’s leading producer of maple syrup. Currently, Canada – mainly the province of Quebec – produces more than 80 percent of the worlds supply. The historical and cultural importance of maple syrup is reflected in the use of symbols – Vermont’s state quarter depicts a scene of sap collection, while the Canadian flag famously features the maple leaf.

In keeping with this springtime tradition, the following inns are offering special “Maple Madness” packages next month. So steal yourself away for a weekend to learn about and pay homage to one of New England’s largest exports.

In Vermont, the Bed & Breakfasts Inn Mount Washington Valley (http://www.bbinnsmwv.com/cgi-bin/inns/march_madness.pl) will once again host their annual March Maple Madness Tour on Saturday, March 22, 2014 from 10:30am – 5pm. A self-guided tour will include the sampling of maple treats, a visit to several “sugaring” locations to experience the maple syrup process firsthand, and shopping at local boutiques and vendors along the way. “The Maddening Scavenger Hunt” will give guests the opportunity to win prizes by answering questions and uncovering objects and artifacts. The participant who scores the most points will win a $200 certificate toward a two-night stay at any participating member of Bed Breakfasts Inn Mount Washington Valley, as well as a dinner certificate for The Notchland Inn, horse and carriage ride for two at the Farm by the River B&B Stable, and a Maple Madness gift basket.
