NekNomination – The Social Media Beer Chugging Craze

By now, it’s almost certain you’ve seen one or more of your friends on social media downing a beer, burping through an acceptance speech, and ending with a call to action for three other friends. What’s this trend all about?

DENVER - Feb. 11, 2014 - PRLog -- Aside from making your distant relatives think you’re more of a party animal than your social media profiles already lead them to believe, the beer chugging trend, known as NekNomination, is taking social media by storm.

According to Wikipedia1, the trend originally started as a drinking competition between friends in Cambridge back in 2008; but leave it up to the Australians to take it up a notch, turning the game into the newest social media craze.  The trend is just now beginning to hit the United States.

So what is NekNomination and what are the rules?

•For starters, the participant (a.k.a. the NekNominee) is challenged by a friend who has recently completed the beer chug on camera.

•The NekNominee must then post a video completing the same task within 24 hours of nomination, along with personal nominations of three friends.

•The typical acceptance speech goes as follows: “Thank you (insert nominator) for your nomination.” Chugging ensues. “I’d like to nominate (insert names of three friends).  You have 24-hours to complete this task. Cheers!”

•The new NekNominees must be tagged within the post to signify the 24-hour count down has begun.

•Kind of like a game of recess tag, there are no immediate tag-backs to your nominator.

•Creativity is not necessary but as with all Internet videos, it is certainly encouraged.

What if the NekNominee doesn’t complete his or her challenge within the time window?

•The participant then owes their challenger a case of beer (or whatever it was their nominator chugged before them).

•In addition, the nominee will likely be subject to continuous ridicule and is forever banished from the game of NekNomination.

While there are yet to be reports of anyone in the U.S. taking the game too far (emphasis on yet), the same cannot be said for other parts of the world.  Multiple people are thought to have died as a result of the game, usually from consuming absurd amounts of alcohol in one sitting2.

To some people, chugging alcohol just doesn’t seem to suffice.  A man in Ireland reportedly beheaded a bird, consumed its guts, and then jumped off a cliff during his NekNomination video, according to the Belfast Telegraph3. No saying whether his NekNominees chose to accept the challenge or just buy the nominator a fresh case of birds.

While there’s no telling where the trend will lead as it gains popularity in the United States, it’s safe to say a majority of people would like to go without seeing any animal sacrificial-esque practices on their social media feeds.  With that said, if you choose to partake, it's probably time you start thinking of three friends to nominate, and a creative way to do it, because NekNomination is spreading around the world like wildfire.  Chug a beer if you must, but please leave the defenseless birds out of it.
