PRLog -- Attorney Evan Guthrie of the Evan Guthrie Law Firm in Charleston, South Carolina spoke about estate planning and probate to the Merry Widows group at the Fleet Reserve Association Lowcountry Chapter in Goose Creek, SC on Tuesday September 10, 2013. The talk was sponsored by the South Carolina Aging In Place Coalition as part of a lunch and learn about various topics that effect seniors in the Charleston, SC area. The SC Aging In Place Coalition speakers bureau is an educational community outreach arm of the organization that seeks to spread awareness of important issues and resources in five critical areas of need including Healthy Living, Livable Residences, Financial And Legal, Supportive Relationships, and Transportation. Attorney Evan Guthrie spoke on the topic of financial and legal and in particular the need to do proper estate planning to be able to remain in one’s house and successfully age in place. Mr. Guthrie talked about the need to have a durable power of attorney in place to avoid a situation in which the probate court with an appointment of a guardian and conservator may have to step in mange ones well being and finances and disrupt the ability to remain in one’s residence. Attorney Guthrie also explained the importance of having advance directives in place including a health care power of attorney and a declaration of a desire of natural death also known as a living will to put in writing what kind of health care decisions and end of life choices one wants to not only age in place, but to make it easier on family members or other loved ones left behind in a potentially difficult time.
This was the first speaking event that Attorney Evan Guthrie took part in with the South Carolina Aging In Place Coalition as part of their speakers bureau. The Merry Widows were a lively and interactive group that asked many questions and told their stories of how they planned to age in place. Mr. Guthrie enjoyed the chance to be able to speak to and educate the group on many important issues. Attorney Guthrie looks forward to being able to return again and speak to many more groups in the future
