All natural rubies have imperfections in them, including colour impurities and inclusions of rutile needles called silk. Manufacturers use these needle inclusions found in natural rubies to distinguish them from synthetics, simulants, or substitutes. Usually the rough stone is heated before cutting. Almost all rubies today are treated in some form, with heat treatment being the most common practice. However, rubies that are completely untreated but still of excellent quality command a large premium.
Rubies also have fractures & milky appearance which needs to be removed while manufacturing GEMSTONE BEADS OR CABOCHONS to improve its clarity.
Ruby belongs to CORUNDUM group of stones..The group includes Ruby & Sapphire,in sapphire if red colour comes then it becomes ruby.Best quality Ruby is generally of 'PIGEON BLOOD' Red Colour.
RUBY MINES are generally found in Myanmar,Sri Lanka, Tanzania(Preferrable for Ruby Gemstone Beads), Thailand,Madagascar & Mozambique(Madagarcar & Mozambique roughs are generally meant for glass filling purpose which later might be manufactured as GEMSTONE BEADS).
TREATMENTS: There are various Treatments done on Ruby to Improve its Colour & Clarity...Some of the processes are as follows:
1) GLASS FILLED RUBY : In this process Ruby is heated at 1800 degrees centigrate & a chemical is being introduced which fills up its fractures & improves the clarity of the Stone.
2) HEATING : Ruby is heated to a certain temperature which improves its colour. Its generally being done on Longido Ruby.
3) DYEING : Natural Corundum which is in White or light red colour. The colour dyeing process is done by heating ruby & putting oil with colour which sets till inside the stone. The colour is very much permanent in nature but might get off a bit by putting it thinner.
