Viewpoint Laboratories launches Gel-Assist System for smartphone-based gel documentation

PUTNAM, Conn. - Dec. 18, 2013 - PRLog -- Viewpoint Laboratories' new product offering, the "Viewpoint Gel-Assist System for Smartphones", is the first device on the market designed with all the features necessary to enable high-quality documentation of electrophoresis gels using virtually any smartphone, any transilluminator, and any gel size from mini to maxi.

The product includes an ergonomic universal mounting system that works with most smartphones (as well as the iPod touch® 5th gen. and similar devices), and one of two choices of magnetically mounted fluorescence filters (535 nm for SYBR® Green, etc.; and 590 nm for ethidium bromide, etc.). The user simply positions the device at the desired height above the transilluminator to obtain as small or as large a field of view as necessary. Add-on options include a second filter and a mini-gel size dark hood attachment.

"We know researchers are taking advantage of the advancements in mobile device cameras for gel documentation," said a spokesperson for the company. "However, for these mobile devices to serve as a viable alternative to traditional gel documentation systems, it's critical that appropriate fluorescence filters be used, especially when UV excitation is involved.
