With the economic and legislative changes that have occurred in the legal sector in recent years, many law firms have struggled to adapt and survive. These changes to the legal system are continuing to happen and will affect many more law firms, leaving behind the firms that produce more client focussed services and embrace new marketing and business development strategies.
Where many firms have struggled, ORJ Solicitors have pushed forward and continued to grow. In 2013, the firm announced the appointment of two new Partners. Harj Dhatt, promoted internally within the Commercial Property team and also Christopher Williams, a Corporate and Commercial partner with extensive experience in both private practice and industry (the latter as in house legal counsel for the Co-operative Group.
Working closely with the Corporate and Commercial team, the Commercial Property team has seen the market pick up slightly, receiving some major instructions in 2013. New business relationships have been forged with a large Housing Association and continual instructions have given the team the opportunity to work on projects such as selling part of a large industrial estate and a land acquisition purchase for a large manufacturing business.
The Litigation and Dispute Resolution teams have seen great success by becoming a Legal 500 recommended tier one firm for litigation. The Legal 500 is the most comprehensive survey of law firms in the UK where client referrals make up a part of the decision making process as well as taking into account the type, size and success of cases. One such case that had a successful outcome at mediation, was the settlement of a £20 million dispute involving source code ownership and the misuse of Intellectual property. The Dispute Resolution team have welcomed a new addition to the team in late 2013, David Edwards, who brings with him substantial and broad commercial litigation experience in areas including property disputes, professional negligence and contractual disputes.
As well as offering tier one services to businesses, ORJ has built a strong Private Client team offering advice in relation to; conveyancing, wills and probate and matrimonial, are equally as ambitious as the commercial divisions. The Conveyancing team is expected to convey over two hundred million pounds of residential property in 2013 and to substantially increase this in 2014.
As a firm that values serving the local community as well as working nationally, they organised an extremely enjoyable event in September, raising £5,000 for the Mayor of Stafford Borough’s Charity Appeal where local businesses joined the law firm in a very enjoyable afternoon of clay pigeon shooting! The Mayor’s consort even had his first ever go with a shotgun at the event. The Worshipful the Mayor presented the prizes afterwards alongside Senior Partner of ORJ, Patrick Tedstone and she later commented, “ORJ’s Clay Pigeon Shoot was a well organised event which was supported by a commendable number of businesses from Stafford and the surrounding area, my Consort and I had a very pleasant time when we joined the teams for the Final Flush and the buffet supper. It was evident when chatting with participants in the genial atmosphere that all had thoroughly enjoyed the competition.”
ORJ offer services including litigation, property, corporate and commercial, conveyancing, matrimonial, wills and probate legal advice and having had such an eventful 2013 look to aim high in 2014.
