By: Aven, Inc. This accessory turns an existing inspection system into a Wi-Fi hotspot able to send high-quality images to iOS and Android devices within about 30 feet. No Internet connection or wireless network is needed. The pocket-size Connect Adapt and accompanying eyepiece adapter attach easily to virtually any microscope, bringing advanced image-saving and sharing capability to quality control inspectors, medical technicians, lab researchers, engineering teams, educators and others. "This cost-effective upgrade takes current optical equipment to the next level,” says Aven president Mike Shahpurwala. "It’s like gaining a new microscope without buying one." Aven’s Adapt Camera works with a free Wi-Viewer App that simultaneously links three phones or tablets -- letting each user see magnified images or video, and save them on separate devices. (Wi-Viewer can be downloaded from Apple’s App Store or the Google Play Store.) Users attach Connect Adapt to a C-mount trinocular port or over an eyepiece with the adapter provided. A snapshot button lets images be saved to all connected devices. Active pixel technology and a ¼” color CMOS sensor assure crisp imaging and accurate hues. Video is recorded at 15 frames per second. The camera -- which has automatic gain control, white balance and exposure functions -- generally operates for up to 3.5 hours before its three AA nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries require recharging. Batteries and charger are part of Aven’s package. In addition to applications in industrial inspection of parts, electronics and other assembled items, Connect Adapt lets instructors send images directly to trainees’ iPads, iPhones or Android phones – turning any workbench into a mobile classroom without needing PCs. Lab techs can share cell samples or other diagnostic images with health care providers whenever two or three of them are near a microscope. “The Adapt camera really is a large breakthrough that leverages the tablet or phone all professionals keep handy,” says Shahpurwala.
