greeNEWit Reminds All that Energy Efficiency Tax Credits Will Expire in Late December

COLUMBIA, Md. - Nov. 25, 2013 - PRLog -- COLUMBIA, MD - Make sure to call greeNEWit for your Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® Energy Audit before the qualifying tax credits and rebates expire.  The $500tax credit for energy-efficient upgrades will be expiring at the end of this year, so now is the perfect time to take advantage of all the ways you can help improve your home’s comfort, energy efficiency, durability and safety while lowering your utility bills. The upgrades are broken into two categories, each qualifying for different tax credit amounts.

The first category is the doors, windows and insulation. A household can receive 10 percent of the cost of upgrading the efficiency of the home’s envelope, capping at $500. The improvements eligible for credit are as follows:

Insulation materials

Exterior doors and windows (windows capped at $200)

Asphalt roofs containing cooling granules and pigmented metal roofs for heat reduction

The second category includes heating, cooling and water heating. A household may receive the full cost of the HVAC equipment in tax credit with the following caps set, according to DSIRE:

Advanced main air circulating fan: $50

Natural gas, propane, or oil furnace or hot water boiler with an annual fuel utilization rate of 95 or greater: $150

Electric heat pump water heater with an energy factor of at least 2.0: $300

Electric heat pump that achieves the highest efficiency tier established by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE): $300

Central air conditioner that achieves the highest efficiency tier established by the CEE: $300

Natural gas, propane or oil water heater that has either an energy factor of at least 0.82 or a thermal efficiency of at least 90 percent: $300

Biomass stoves that use plant-derived fuel such as wood pellets: $300

Claims are strictly for primary residences only and homeowners who filed claims in the past six years are ineligible to receive the credit. Upon implementing your energy efficiency upgrades, you must file an IRS form 5695 alongside your 2013 taxes. For more information about the tax credit requirements, visit Energystar.gov (http://www.energystar.gov/) and the DSIRE (http://dsireusa.org/incentives/incentive.cfm?Incentive_Co...) website.
