PEOPLE HELPED IN RECOVERY TO DATE:

To date we have served over 600 individuals in our community providing them with access to housing, food, recovery support services, case management, social services assistance and much more

AN EPIDEMIC IN THE UNITED STATES

The 20.6 million Americans currently addicted to substances are not the most popular topic of discussion. Our community has instead preferred to operate in a “lock them up and throw away the key” mentality; but these people shouldn’t be thrown away. It is with confidence I believe that all individuals struggling with substance abuse can turn their lives around and re-enter society with the desire and means to make it better.

Since its beginnings, Freedom House Sober Living has followed its mission to create an environment for those in recovery to learn to live with a quality of life they have forgotten or never experienced before. We strive to be a stepping-stone between a life of substance abuse and addiction to one of health and freedom. To build and sustain such an environment, our staff and residents are called to live by four core values:

Nurturing the Spirit: Freedom House cares for the whole individual, including mind, body, and spirit. For this reason, the program offers activities and classes that develop healthy habits for everyday living.

Bridging the Gap: Freedom House provides a safe and supported transition from treatment facilities and/or prison to a successful re-entry into society.

Community: Freedom House believes in long-term success in recovery. All Freedom House staff and residents are people in recovery committed to providing opportunities for social interaction, exercise, and spiritual growth.

Celebration: Freedom House creates space for residents to share their stories at weekly community dinners and feel celebrated, both as an individual and as a member of a community in recovery.

By adhering to these values, Freedom House is able to lay the groundwork for residents to reintegrate into society while providing support and accountability in 12-step programs, a close community of people on similar journeys, and wrap-around services. This type of transition program has been proven to reduce the risk of relapse for former substance abusers, especially when compared to the alternative: releasing the individuals back into the environment where they were at prior to, where behaviors

Freedom House recently celebrated its third anniversary on October 1, 2013.

The Freedom House ANCHOR Project is a unique
, comprehensive re-entry /reintegration project offering a “new approach” to addressing the lack of services for ex-offenders released from state/local correctional institutions.

It has been reported that “over five thousand inmates are released onto the streets of Clark County communities every year. Most have no money, housing, transportation or a job.  A majority of inmates leaving prison return to the community with no savings, no access to stable housing, no health or unemployment benefits and extremely limited employment options. These figures do not include inmates released from local jails and detention centers.” (8 NewsNow, 2005). Additionally, the failure rate for Boot Camp inmates in Nevada is 44% (LV Review Journal, March, 2012). The 2011 Southern Nevada Homeless Census and Survey, reported on any given night more than 9,432 individuals are homeless. Estimates are that 12% of prisoners are homeless upon release from prison.

This project contains the essential elements of an effective re-entry program, including housing, educational/vocational training, employment, and mentoring.

The impact of ex-offenders and/or homeless individuals on Clark County hospitals, prisons and social services is high, and because they do not have a stable place to live or the skills to become employed these persons are at risk for a variety of poor outcomes including re-incarceration. Keeping ex-offenders from becoming homeless and providing the knowledge and skills to become self-sufficient through job training, job placement and mentoring can result in a significant cost savings.
