Shala Worsley, owner of the Asheville School of Massage & Yoga (a NC Board Approved and NCBTMB Assigned School) has announced the massage school is moving after 8 years in its current location. The new Haywood Road location offers twice the space of the current Walnut Street location. When the move is complete, there will be private treatment rooms for the Supervised Student Massage Clinic, a more convenient location, free parking, library, break room and a more professional setting. They even have a Zen garden planned.

The Asheville School of Massage & Yoga trains students in the art of massage therapy with a Yoga-centric theme. “Besides teaching the basics of massage, we include a strong self-care component in our training”, said Ms. Worsley. “We welcome students who are brand new to yoga, as well as those who have already integrated yoga into their lives. At our school, students will find the support they’ve been looking for to start or re-vitalize a daily self-care practice. No yoga experience is necessary. Everyone is welcome!”

The Yoga-centric approach and ‘self-care’ training the students receive help them stay relaxed, strain-free and centered. Self-care through yoga is an excellent way to prevent burn-out and have a long, productive career. With their combined knowledge of yoga, human anatomy, and massage, ASMY graduates are able to offer simple yoga home-work suggestions to their clients in order to extend the benefits of each treatment session. This blend explains the ASMY motto, ‘Yoga plus massage equals sustainable healing.’ Yoga poses are also used at the school as effective teaching tools to help students understand and remember anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology principles which can be otherwise elusive.

The personal relationships student develop with instructors are important. There is a high level of mutual hands-on work in the training. Receiving from and giving bodywork to the teachers lets the student experience both sides of the therapy and allows for instant feedback. Participants who have not received regular bodywork may experience remarkable changes. These experiences are necessary for the practitioner to understand the complex effects of the techniques they will use. “The supportive environment, instant feedback from both giving and receiving treatment, working with someone you know and trust, all really help our students learn.”

The training techniques used do seem to work. Students perform community service to meet training requirements. Local fire fighters, school teachers, and shoppers at the Farmer’s Tailgate Market are a few of the groups to benefit from bodywork given by the current class of students.

The goal of the school is to prepare students to become licensed massage therapists, and they are succeeding.

“In order to complete your license for massage therapy in the state of North Carolina, you must graduate from a Board-approved school, pass the ‘Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination’ (MBLEx) for massage and bodywork therapy, and complete the licensure application from the North Carolina Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy”, said Shala. “We’re proud that 97% of our graduates pass the MBLEx on the first try.”

“After graduation, the process to become licensed is a bit complex,” said Shala, “But our Registrar, Sue Wilson, is ready to answer students’ questions and has an easy to follow, step-by-step check-list in the informational packet each student receives.” The application process can be completed 30 to 90 days after graduation if the student follows the checklist.

Sue, a member of the school’s first graduating class, left her position as a Training and Development Consultant at G.E. to follow a more meaningful path. “Yoga is a journey of health and wellness,” said Sue. “Working with the school was a better fit. Not only do the Yoga principles we teach help you prepare for, administer and recover from treatments you give, but they also keep you active and productive your whole life.”

As the school’s registrar, Sue has welcomed in-coming students from as far away as Alaska with widely varied professional backgrounds such as mortgage banker, engineer, and pretzel maker. “Our students come from all over the country to get their massage certification in Asheville.” Many of the students, after a fun six months exploring Asheville, move away and have become successful in North Carolina and other states. Sometimes they return to become mentors to students at the school as Individualized Tutorial Instructors. This way, the new students gain the benefit of their experience.

Asheville School of Massage & Yoga’s new, larger location will allow the school to train more licensed massage therapists and improve the learning experience. “Our new location will be more accessible, modern and professional”, said Ms. Worsley. “For instance, our massage treatment rooms will be more similar to a private office or spa setting, so our students will learn in the environment they will work in.”

“We are currently enrolling a new class, the first to be trained in the new facility. This class will help ground the energy of the new Asheville School of Massage & Yoga”, said Shala. “We are even offering a discount for early sign-ups for the new class.”
