New Solar Barn in Minnesota makes "Cents"

MINNEAPOLIS - Sept. 26, 2013 - PRLog -- When an Independence, MN family needed a place to park and charge thier electric vehicle, they inquired to  see if a structure could be built that also would create the electricity to charge thier Chevy Volt. Dee Dee Foster couldn't be happier with what will soon be her new parking spot. "We will have a barn that will also create 15,586 kw of electricity every year," Foster said. She found Minnesota Renewable Energies of Glencoe, MN who created and developed the plan for a solar barn including 12kw of solar panels. At first, Foster looked at a small wind turbine to create her own electricity. Despite having 11 acres, city restrictions negated her plan for wind, but lower prices on solar combined with new technology and little to no maintenance turned out to be the preffered option for Foster and her family. "At first we just wanted to do the right thing for the environment. We had no idea that we were going to end up with a smart investment, but we will take it," Foster added. The cost of solar installations has decreased by approximately 50% in the last year. Minnesota Renewable Energies was able to provide a solar installation at a price of $3 per watt. The panels have a 25-year warranty and a 40-year life expectancy. Solar installations are also eligible for a 30% Investment Tax Credit and businesses can also lower the total cost with depreciation. Foster's new solar home is expected to show a return on investment long before trade-in time for her Chevy Volt. Construction of this solar barn is underway and is expected to be completed this Fall. "It will also look fantastic," Foster said. "With the solar panels also creating electricity to charge my Volt, it will also make a lot of sense (cents)."
