NYS Chiropractic Group Appoints Dr. John Piazza as President of District 5

Dr. Piazza aims to use appointment as catalyst to combat prescription drug addiction

Staten Island, NY – After almost 20 years of dedication to the Chiropractic profession, the New York State Chiropractic Association (NYSCA) has appointed NY Chiropractic and Physical Therapy’s Dr. John Piazza as President of their District 5. NYSCA has been the governing foundation for Chiropractic service standards since 1970.

With this announcement, Dr. Piazza launches his initiative towards decreasing Staten Island’s dependency on prescription medications. He vehemently encourages the usage of Chiropractic care and Physical Therapy as a viable alternative to drugs for the treatment of injuries from work, auto-accidents, or any chronic pain. This supports the views of New York State Assemblyman Michael Cusick, who has worked tirelessly to curtail the disturbing hike of prescription medication addiction. When reflecting on one of last month’s articles in the Staten Island Advance concerning prescription drug abuse, Cusick said, “Staten Island has the highest rate of addiction and pill overdose deaths in the city, a harrowing realization.”

By working with local legislators on a state level, Dr. Piazza continues to lobby on behalf of NYSCA to broaden the coverage available to Workers’ Compensation patients. This is following the 2010 legislation that restricts patients from having access to long term treatment for chronic pain. Senator Diane Savino makes a note of this legislation when asked about the epidemic on Staten Island: “Patients turn to pain medication because they no longer have access to services such as chiropractic care, and often this is how the cycle of addiction begins.”

Dr. Piazza hopes to further educate the public on recent innovations in the Chiropractic field, so that they understand there are alternative options for pain management. “We have enhanced our ability to lessen the need for prescription drugs or surgery,” he said recently. “Significant advancements in the Chiropractic field are comprised of new techniques and modalities, such as Laser Therapy devices that emit healing photons of light from a hand-held device. There is also the SpineForce 3-D Exercise Technology, which is the first FDA cleared machine designed to pinpoint and strengthen the 180 deep spinal muscles that improve strength, balance, coordination, proprioception, posture and range of motion all in one unique machine.”
