Added Milk Or Sugar The Only Significant Source of Calories in Tea - RateTea Reports

By: RateTea / Merit Exchange LLC

PHILADELPHIA - Aug. 12, 2013 - PRLog -- Tea has negligible calories, but the common additions of sugar and/or cream or milk can add significant calories to tea.

Bottled teas, called ready-to-drink (RTD) teas in the industry, are among the worst culprits, with many examples of the market having more tea even than some sodas.

Refined sugars contribute empty calories

Calories from refined sugars, like standard white table sugar, contribute empty calories, meaning that they have no vitamins, minerals, protein, essential fats, or nutritional value other than calories.

Milk and cream by contrast contain numerous essential nutrients, especially calcium but also small amounts of essential fats, Vitamin A, and other nutrients.

Avoiding the need for sweetening or adding milk to tea

RateTea suggests multiple approaches for people who wish to reduce or eliminate their use of sweetener and/or milk in tea, thus helping them to enjoy a virtually calorie-free beverage.

These approaches include seeking out naturally-sweet teas, including higher grades of loose-leaf tea, and exploring traditional teas from Asian tea traditions, which typically drink their tea without milk or sugar.  These other tea types include green, white, and oolong teas.

Lastly, RateTea provides tips on how to gradually acclimate oneself to the subtle and bitter tastes of pure, unsweetened tea.
