Parental Supervision is Key to Water Safety

West Palm Beach, FL – Murray & Guari Trial Attorneys want to remind parents that the key to children’s water safety is parental supervision, involvement, and common sense.

It’s Florida; it’s summer; and it’s hot and humid. Who wouldn’t like to spend a day at the beach, be on the lake or in a swimming pool? While it is nice to have fun and stay cool, water can be very dangerous. Drownings can occur in complete silence, while a parent is present, in just a few inches of water and in less than five minutes.

According to the center for Disease Control (CDC), drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 1 to 14 years, and the fifth leading cause for people of all ages.

6 Important Water Safety Tips for Parents:

* Teach your child to swim by sending them to formal swimming lessons.
* Supervise your kids around the pool, at the ocean or at the lake, even if they know how to swim. Never get distracted by reading, talking on the phone or talking to other parents.
* Swim in the ocean or at pools that provide certified lifeguards who are trained in injury prevention and emergency response.
* Childproof your pool which can include fencing, gates, safety nets, alarms and pool covers.
* Have children who don't know how to swim wear a Coast Guard approved life vest – not  "floaties" or “noodles”, etc.
* Have the right emergency equipment on hand (flotation devices, first aid kit, phone) and learn CPR.

Never leave a child unattended in or near water for even a second. Drowning is preventable. Living in Florida, “the Sunshine State”, water safety awareness is something we all need to be concerned about year-round. We encourage you to get in the water and play with your children. This is also a great teaching opportunity to show kids how to have fun safely.
