Follow on Google News | Albino Mbie will perform at Salem Jazz and Soul Festival/Berklee Summer Series concert, July 13Albino Mbie, a Berklee College of Music student from southeast Africa, will play the 3rd SJSF/Berklee Summer Series concert of 2013 in Derby Square, Salem, on Saturday, July 13.
Mbie was born in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, a country in southern Africa known for its rich cultural and musical heritage. Fueled by the resourcefulness and determination that has always characterized Mozambicans, he built his first guitar at 16 from a 5-liter oil can scarp wood and strings made out of electrical cords. Salem Five Charitable Foundation will sponsor the performance. One more SJSF/Berklee Summer Series concerts will take place this year: Nick Hakim on Aug. 10. The seventh-annual Salem Jazz and Soul Festival will follow the following weekend, Aug. 17-18, featuring 12 bands, a kids’ tent, music-education tent, artisan fair and 21-plus beer pavilion. The two day concert is free. The festival is a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization that produces free concerts and raises money for music education causes on the North Shore.
