Reclaiming the Black Hair Care Industry

Black-Owned Beauty Supply Starts Movement To Reclaim Black Hair Care Industry

WALDORF, Md. - June 25, 2013 - PRLog -- For decades, Korean immigrants have monopolized the Black hair care industry which brings in over $8.7 billion annually. Despite the competitive landscape, mother/daughter duo, Pauline and Taylor started Luxe Beauty Supply, a Black-owned beauty supply store best known for its huge selection of products and staff of knowledgeable hair stylists.

The store received the SBA's Small Business Award in 2009. Luxe Beauty Supply started online and currently has about 3,000 unique visitors per day. Luxe eventually expanded into a retail location in Waldorf, MD. The CEO explains why she started her own beauty supply store, "I started Luxe because frankly, I was tired of the lack of concern for me and my needs.  The cultural and language differences (between Korean store owners and myself) made the experience both impersonal and transactional.  Being followed around the store and not being able to ask questions was like a slap in the face considering the amount of money I spent".

Luxe Beauty Supply prides itself on providing exceptional customer service from personal thank you notes to in-store and online hair tutorials. Luxe recently celebrated the retail store's 1- year anniversary by rewarding its customers with deep discounts, free food, live music and a flat screen TV giveaway. Owners, Pauline and her daughter Taylor, are currently planning to expand into other major cities with hopes that their success inspires other Black entrepreneurs to join the movement and start reclaiming the Black hair care industry.
