SAN FRANCISCO - June 24, 2013 - PRLog -- City of Oakland has chosen to work with Vuact to increase audience participation and transparency with the Public Ethics Commission hearing on Tuesday, June 25th. Vuact provides City of Oakland with an intuitive, easy-to-use interface for the video streaming of the hearing, allowing viewers to participate and get their opinions heard in real time.

With Vuact, video viewers can mark their reactions and thoughts to things they see without interrupting the video. This allows for real-time engagement with the video content. The interactions are saved and used to show audiences what parts of the video have been the most valuable, interesting, or debate-inspiring, for instance.

"We're thrilled to join with Vuact to enable the Public Ethics Commission to engage the public in the discussion at our transparency hearing in real time," says Whitney Barazoto, Executive Director of the Oakland Public Ethics Commission. "The goal of our hearing is to assess Oakland’s transparency and develop a roadmap for further opening up City government.  Vuact gives us an edge: not just in gathering citizen input for our Commission but also opening up City government in the process."

The Public Ethics Commission's June 25th hearing features thought leaders in the field of government transparency who say that government transparency is about opening up and sharing information as well as engaging the public in the process. Many meetings of Oakland City government, including the Public Ethics Commission, already are broadcast live on local government television; partnering with Vuact will take the meetings online and allow viewers to comment on the Commission’s discussion as it happens, moving government openness from one-way communication to a two-way, collaborative interaction.

Topics and speakers include:

• Government as a Platform - Tim O'Reilly, O'Reilly Media
• Transparency 101 - Laurenellen McCann, Sunlight Foundation
• The State of Transparency in California - Robb Korinke, California Forward
• Innovations and Engagement - Alissa Black, New America Foundation
• Public Participation - Greg Greenway, Davenport Institute
• Oakland Innovations - Nicole Neditch, Oakland City Administrator's Office
• Community Partners - Steve Spiker, OpenOakland

"Video not only takes time to produce, it also takes time to consume", says Mikko Jarvenpaa, CEO of Vuact. "With our video player, the makers and publishers of video can have more engaged audiences and more interaction around their content. For City of Oakland, this translates into increased civic participation. For a commercial video publisher, this can mean more views or longer time spent with the content, for example."
