Linklaters to highlight ‘Five Pathways to TMT Growth for Africa’ at London conference

June 19, 2013 - PRLog -- Julian Cunningham-Day, Global Co-Head of Telecoms, Linklaters, a leading global law firm, will deliver the opening keynote speech entitled ‘Exploring Five Pathways to TMT Growth for Africa’ at this year’s TMT Finance & Investment Africa conference in London on June 20.

The keynote speech will introduce key themes and challenges affecting growth for African telecom companies, and will be followed by the Africa Telecom Leadership Round Table featuring CEOs from Etisalat Nigeria, LAP Green, Wananchai Group, Sudatel Group and Avanti Communications.

Cunningham-Day will also feature on the TMT M&A Panel – how will consolidation and restructuring reshape the market, later in the morning. He will be joined by merger and acquisition experts from Etisalat Group, Barclays Capital, Lazard Frères and Ernst & Young  to discuss the latest opportunities and trends for M&A across the region.

African telecoms M&A is expected to increase significantly over the course of the next 18 months as operators look to consolidate portfolios, and the TMT Finance & Investment Africa conference brings together key players from operators, investors and advisers.

“Airtel’s Warid Uganda deal was its first African in-market acquisition, which could kick-start its consolidation push in several key African markets,” one banker told TMT Finance, the news service and event organiser. “All major operators across the continent, including Airtel, MTN, France Telecom-Orange and Etisalat are focusing on becoming number one or two in each market in which they are present – it just isn’t viable to be fourth or fifth player in some of these markets now.”

Dominic Lowndes, Managing Director, TMT Finance, added: “We expect Africa to be one of the busiest regions for telecoms transactions over the next year. There are a large number of sale and consolidation opportunities across the continent, but there are plenty of risks and complexities to consider too,” he said.

Over 150 senior executives will attend the conference, which is now in its fourth year. Other companies represented by speakers include France Telecom-Orange, Vodacom, Liquid Telecom, Seacom, Sudatel, O3B Networks, TRA Lebanon, Ericsson, Avanti Communications, Huawei, Helios Towers, IHS Africa, Eaton Towers, UBS, Standard Bank, Rand Merchant Bank, Herbert Smith Freehills, Fidelity Bank, IFC World Bank, Analysys Mason, ING, Mott Macdonald, Capital MSL and Access Bank.
