Follow on Google News | Adelphi Community March to End Sexual ViolenceTake Back the Night first appeared in Europe in 1976 and has continued throughout the world as a sign of empowerment for women, men and children. Adelphi University first joined the movement last year. This year’s event will include student performances, a keynote speech from Emily May, a co-founder of IhollaBack.Org, a speak-out where survivors of sexual assault are given the opportunity to share their stories, and finally a march around campus. During the march around campus, some individuals will participate in a "SlutWalk." SlutWalks began in 2011, as a direct response to Toronto police stating that women who do not want to get raped should not dress like sluts. Since then the movement has grown as a call to end victim-blaming worldwide. As a part of the movement, student organizations and members of the Adelphi community will chalk-up the campus with quotes and also paint windows around campus.
