Spot the Difference: Project Management vs. Project Planning

Project Management and Project Planning are the most commonly mixed up terms in project implementation. Find out why.

LA HABRA, Calif. - March 13, 2013 - PRLog -- La Harba, CA, March 12, 2013 /Project Manager/ Project Manager Ltd. released another Whiteboard session video; this time, it’s all about the differences between Project Management and Project Planning. These terms, in spite of the obvious definition found in the words Management and Planning, are commonly misused within project teams.

Why is Project Planning, not Project Management?

There was a diagram in the Whiteboard Session video which shows a graph of the entire process during project implementation. “If you look at the diagram, we have the start of the project and the end of the project and a lot of things going on in between. There are five process groups identified by the Project Management Institute. There are the initiating processes, there are planning processes, executing processes, monitoring and controlling processes, and the closing processes. That’s five project management process groups here that make up the whole life cycle of the project.” Says Whitt – Bridges while she introduces the image in the video.

Project planning is just a part of the entire project implementation which includes management. Planning is basically drafting out the game scheme or the baseline, while management it implementing and controlling the items included in the initial plan. Most people misuse these terms since project planning takes a lot of time  and they got used to the term project planning; plus project planning is introduced to them before PM. “As you can see, the project planning process group is only one of five.” Whitt – Bridges defined PP “Developing the project management plan, so the project management plan includes all of the plans that identify how the project is run, when it’s run, by who, who does what, when, and where for each of the planning documents. In here also the project manager collects requirements, helps define the scope, creates a work breakdown structure, develops a schedule, estimates costs, defines the budget, and many other activities that go on in the planning process.” She added.

Basically, PM is the entire thing, while PP is just a part of it. “You can actually see what the difference is. Many times you may see project managers who do all the planning for the project, and they actually sit those project plans on the desk and not use them. As you can see, the difference of this, the management part, the project management is actually utilizing these planning documents to execute, monitor and control, and actually close out the project.” Whitt - Bridges said. “You can see the difference between the two. You need both. Project planning isn’t project management.” She added.
