20 North Gallery Presents “Intersections: Paintings by Abner Hershberger”

Toledo, OH—March 1, 2013.          On Friday, March 15th, 20 North Gallery opens the exhibit “Intersections: Paintings by Abner Hershberger,” which continues through Friday, May 3, 2013.  Hershberger,  Emeritus Professor of Art at Goshen College in Indiana, is a celebrated Midwestern artist working in the fields of sculpture, painting and printmaking who last exhibited at 20 North Gallery in 2008.  This spring, he returns to the Toledo area with a solo showing of his abstract aerial landscapes.

These recent paintings of Abner Hershberger continue to explore, through a visually poetic aesthetic, the rich field patterns, crossroads and markings of the Midwest.  The work reflects the stark delineations of furrowed land, stubble fields and patterns of cultivation and irrigation. Although abstracted, the paintings deftly document a sense of the diverse, intense and surprising color combinations found in nature.  The most recent series of his work, “Intersection,” incorporates brightly painted wood elements, providing a low-relief sculptural dimension joined to the flat canvas surfaces— his first foray in which 2D and 3D elements are combined in the same work, expressing both interests.

Abner Hershberger (Goshen, Indiana) serves as Professor Emeritus of Art at Goshen College, having taught there since 1962 after receiving his BA from Goshen in 1960.  He also holds an MAT (1965) from Bloomington University in Indiana and an MFA (1970) from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.  He has taught painting and printmaking workshops at colleges and universities throughout the United States and Europe and is a frequent lecturer at the Midwest Museum of American Art in Elkhart, Indiana.  Abner Hershberger’s sculpture, paintings and prints have been featured in solo shows at museums, universities and commercial galleries throughout the world.  In addition to the permanent collection of Goshen College, his work is in numerous private, corporate and museum collections, including the Midwestern Museum of American Art; the Bade Museum of Art, Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California; the North Dakota Museum of Art in Grand Forks, North Dakota; South Bend Museum of Art, South Bend, Indiana; Loveland Museum, Loveland. Colorado; Harvard Divinity School, Cambridge, Massachusetts; Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; Musee D'Art Haitien, Port-au-Prince, Haiti; the Bureau of Higher Education in Sichuan Province, People's Republic of China; and the Fine Arts Academy in Warsaw, Poland.

20 North Gallery and Abner Hershberger will be welcoming friends and collectors at the free Opening Reception on Friday, March 15th, from 6 - 9p.m.  Reception attendees can enjoy light refreshments and conversations with the artist while viewing his work available for sale.
