Benefits of Engineering Credentials Clearly Defined by the CESB

Feb. 11, 2013 - PRLog -- In 2012, the Council of Engineering & Scientific Specialty Boards (CESB) and the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) released a historic consensus document about credentials for engineers and allied professionals.  The document, Engineering Credentials, offers a wealth of information about the use and benefits of credentials in a concise six page document.

An area of particular interest to engineers and allied professionals is the section discussing the benefits of credentials. It states, “Credentials, both licenses and accredited certifications, offer benefits to credentialed practitioners, their employers, and consumers of practitioners’ services.”  The document goes on to list the benefits to the various groups, they include:

Benefits of Credentials to Practitioners:
•   independent testimony to an individual’s capabilities;
•   increased credibility;
•   increased rewards— advancement, compensation and responsibilities;
•   satisfaction of peer recognition; and
•   a mechanism assuring continuing professional development.

Benefits of Credentials to Employers:
•   independent, objective testimony to an individual’s capabilities;
•   an attribute to use for qualifying applicants for employment;
•   an independent benchmark to use in personnel evaluations; and
•   enhanced stature of an employer’s staff.

Benefits of Credentials to Consumers
•   independent, objective testimony to an individual’s capabilities;
•   identification of capability;
•   technical credibility; and
•   a mechanism for screening potential service providers.

“Engineering Credentials provides the reader with a clear understanding of the many ways that these types of credentials help everyone involved,” stated William Anderson, P.E., DEE, Executive Director at CESB.   “The document is available at no charge for all to view at the CESB’s website.”
