Feb. 5, 2013 - PRLog -- MINNEAPOLIS -- Radon gas is widely known as a leading cause of environmental lung cancer throughout the United States. For over 20 years the Environmental Protection Agency has been encouraging more regulation to mandate testing for radon gas and mitigating the problem when levels are 4 pCi/l or higher.

Yesterday, key members of HUD, EPA, Surgeon General, and CDC held a press conference to announce new radon testing and radon mitigation requirements for multifamily structures. Government officials as well as the awareness group Cancer Survivors Against Radon (CSAR) believe that this plan of action will save thousands of lives every year.

According to the American Lung Association, radon gases kill over 20,500 North Americans annually. This statistic makes radon the leading in-home killer in the U.S. "It is unfortunate that so many lives are taken by radon. Most victims live in homes where their air is killing them and they don't even know it," states James Gelina. His firm, S.W.A.T. Environmental installs ventilation equipment to rid homes of dangerous radon gas. "Because radon has no color, odor, or flavor; the only way to detect it is by performing a test," Gelina continued.

These new radon testing and radon mitigation requirements by HUD will give low income families the peace of mind of knowing that their homes are safe. SWAT Environmental, the largest radon mitigation company in the U.S., will be working in cooperation with the new HUD radon requirements to offer affordable solutions when elevated radon levels are detected. According to Nate Nowicki, president of SWAT Environmental of Colorado, "a radon mitigation system can be installed in most homes in less than a day and the cost is in line with most home repairs."

In order to keep up with the demand for radon testing and radon mitigation services that will flourish as a result of these new HUD requirements, there will be a need for continued growth within the private sector of the radon industry. SWAT Environmental will be offering business franchise opportunities as well as ongoing training for radon mitigation and testing professionals. Between now and deployment of HUD's radon policy, Bill Angel of the University of Minnesota will be implementing several NEHA-approved courses at SWAT Environmental's 15,000 square foot training facility.
