Mr. Barton is a retired chairman and chief executive officer of Caterpillar Inc. in Peoria, Illinois. With 2011 revenues of $60.138 billion, Caterpillar is the world's leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives.
Mr. Barton joined Caterpillar as a college graduate trainee in 1961. During his 43-year career, he held numerous marketing and management positions throughout the world, prior to being elected Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in February 1999. He retired from Caterpillar on January 31, 2004. Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Barton was a member of the President’s Export Council. He served as a Global Advisor to The Conference Board and as a trustee of the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award Foundation. In 2011, he was recognized by his peers as one of six Outstanding Corporate Directors and this past September he was inducted into the Mining Hall of Fame. Among his many philanthropic activities, Mr. Barton is the past Chairman of the Peoria Civic Federation and a founding director of Peoria NEXT and the Central Illinois Angel (“CIA”) Network. The latter is an investor in Intellihot.
