Dec. 17, 2012 - PRLog -- With the official start of winter only a few days away, many areas have already experienced the seasonal cold weather that has resulted in homes and businesses firing up the furnaces and sealing up the properties.

It’s during this time of year when many people begin to experience health issues related to indoor environmental and indoor air quality issues.  Building occupants may complain of stuffy rooms and odors or experience more frequent allergies and even asthma attacks.  All of these conditions and complaints may be due to their indoor surroundings.

During the winter months, many homes and buildings may experience a lack of ventilation, or in some cases inadequate fresh air.  When this occurs, indoor pollutants can build up.  These pollutants can range from mold, pollen from indoor plants, pet dander, and even volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from chemicals stored indoors or off-gassing from building materials and furnishing.

Other hidden dangers can also build up during this time of year.  Naturally occurring radon, or chemicals entering a structure due to vapor intrusion can be a concern.  Also, with furnaces running to keep people warm, faulty boilers and furnaces could be releasing carbon monoxide (CO) into the indoor environment.

People in the Mid-Atlantic region who have indoor environmental concerns turn to Sussex Environmental Health Consultants (SEHC), a Delaware based environmental and IAQ consulting firm.  Susan White, Ph.D., CMC, President of SEHC, reported, “We often see an increase in certain types of indoor air quality complaints during the winter months.  Sometimes the cause is readily apparent, but often times it takes a keen eye and sophisticated equipment to locate the source, or sources, of a problem.  Our seasoned staff are experts at finding and resolving these types of problems.”
