Follow on Google News | Langport, the town that dressed itself. In these times of austerity it is often hard to get a consensus, let alone encourage businesses to go along with a single, untested idea … nevertheless this is exactly what the majority of traders of Langport’s High Street have just done.
Teresa Baker, known as Tracey, a Creative Marketing Consultant and a member of the Langport Area Business Group approached the Group at their AGM in November and suggested the idea. The response was unanimous. Tracey approached town traders in the town centre and the town council. Again the response was overwhelmingly positive. The decorations were judiciously chosen not to detract from the individuality of each business. Teresa carefully selected a winter theme of white paper and recycled card snowflakes, made in the UK, in keeping with the spirit of sustainability that most local traders have.…And so smallest town in England and a total of 34 businesses signed up, the decorations were ordered and Tracey, together with her army of volunteers, dressed the town shop fronts. Each window was individually designed using the same components in different configurations and sizes to best show off the diversity amongst the businesses. Tracey said “We really hoped that we would have a good take up – we never imagined such enthusiasm from the local businesses. They have all been wonderful to work with and this project has proved to be a huge amount of fun. The Christmas decorations were taken up by the different traders of Langport. Whether it was the butchers, fish & chips shop, silversmith, dress shops or pet shop –everyone was positive about this.” Town trade has recently been affected by the floods after some the roads became impassable but the spirit of the town is undaunted and this collaboration amongst the town traders just adds to what makes Langport a very special place to be.
