Nov. 26, 2012 - PRLog -- When Joseph first became a resident at Newhaven Court at Lindwood, his family had an understanding of the effects of Alzheimer ’s disease and memory loss issues.

Those closest to Joseph wondered if the man they knew as their father or husband could once again live life to the fullest of his ability. The 85-year-old had spent time at another senior community simply sitting throughout the day with limited communication, and his family felt he had more potential to enjoy life.

Since participating in the IntegraCare Corporation Memory Care Program at Newhaven Court at Lindwood, Joseph has made significant steps. And, by chance, he learned his brother-in-law also was a resident at Lindwood. The apartment available to Joseph actually was in the same room. So, the two relatives became roommates, which made Joseph feel more at home.

“As with any transition, the beginning always has a tendency to be the most challenging, but with family and staff working together and supporting him, Joseph slowly began increasing communication and becoming more active,” said Stephen Nelson, Director of Sales and Marketing at Newhaven Court at Lindwood. “His wife was in tears when she found that he once again was walking. Joseph is an example of how a developed program -- one designed to focus and incorporate on life, family, friends -- and the staff at Newhaven Court has allowed him to continue to live life to the fullest.”

The Newhaven Court at Lindwood Memory Care Program helps residents and their families deal with the effects of memory loss. The program impacts lives year-round, but takes on added significance in November, which is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness and National Family Caregivers Month.

The IntegraCare Memory Care Program has six primary objectives:

·         To provide opportunities for meaningful activities promoting quality of life.

·         A focus on remaining skill and abilities.

·         Create an environment that facilitates a sense of belonging.

·         Provide opportunities that ensure purposeful use of time.

·         Support positive behaviors and reduce risk of incidents of negative behavior.

·         Provide an experience for verbal and non-verbal communication.

Residents are encouraged to participate in productive work typical of their former lifestyle as part of the Memory Care Program.

Recreational activities and memory and sensory activities are integrated into the structured daily routine. The dining services program promotes independence by serving appropriate foods and portions.
