FBI found evidence of a potentially compromising nature for Patraeus which would have been a breach of national security requirements.
The liaison between the Paula and David, both of whom are married, came to light, as part of an FBI investigation into a potential security breach involving Mr Petraeus's emails.
FBI was alerted that Ms Broadwell may have had access to Mr Petraeus's personal email account. However so far there is no suggestion of any criminal wrongdoing by either person.
Petraeus stepped down suddenly after confessing to cheating and behaviour he explained it was 'unacceptable' for a senior administration official.
David Petraeus was once spoken of as a possible candidate for US president.
