The University of Kansas Audio-Reader Network is a closed circuit radio station serving blind, visually impaired, and print disabled individuals by reading daily newspapers, magazines and books 24 hours a day on the radio in Kansas and western Missouri and worldwide via the internet and telephone. Services are offered free of charge to anyone who is unable to read normal printed material. Listeners include people with sight impairments ranging from Dyslexia to blindness, as well as others who can't physically read normal printed materials due to another disability or illness.
“At CashAdvance.com, we have always believed in supporting the efforts of organizations that are making a difference in the world and helping others,” says CashAdvance.com spokesperson Dave Johnson. “Audio-Reader is a wonderful organization. We hope our donation will help cover costs of radios, newspaper and magazine subscriptions, and technology to share the gift of sight through sound.”
Audio-Reader is generally broadcast on the subcarrier of an FM radio station. This means a special radio is required in the home. The radio is provided by Audio-Reader, on loan, for as long as it is wanted. In locations outside of their broadcast area Audio-Reader will provide a special web radio, or listeners can access programs on the internet. Listeners receive a monthly program guide in large print or Braille.
Established in 1971, Audio-Reader was one of the first radio reading services in the world. Today, with the help of FM radio broadcasters, cable TV companies, microwave relay systems, and the Kansas Lions Sight Foundation Satellite Network, reading by radio is available to thousands of people all across Kansas and western Missouri, with some programming available via satellite through other radio reading services across the US.
