Raspberry ketone, when consumed, induces the production of the hormone adinopectin. This hormone is responsible for fat metabolism in the body. According to researchers, this natural compound has the same structure as capsaicin, a hot pepper extract that is also used for weight loss. Adinopectin hormone acts by increasing the sensitivity of insulin, leading to weight loss. A research done by Korea's FDA to look into the effects of this supplements showed that when male mice are subjected to a high fat diet and raspberry ketone supplements, they had more adinopectin in the body, showed increased fat metabolism, and had less fat retained in the body.

A more recent study, however, reports that raspberry ketone may play a role in increasing skin elasticity and in inducing the growth of new hair in people with alopecia.

The study is by another Japanese research group that formed a similarly based hypothesis to the one that originated the aforementioned obesity study. Since raspberry ketone is chemically similar to capsaicins, and since previous research has shown that capsaicins increase the expression of a dermal (skin) insulin-like growth factor that increases skin elasticity and promotes hair growth, the researchers hypothesized whether raspberry ketones could have the same effect.
