Sony Mobile Becomes No 3 Smartphone Vendor

Nov. 1, 2012 - PRLog -- The Xperia range of phones, predominantly running on google's Android software, began with the X10 in 2010 with the latest being the heavily promoted ‘Bond Phone’ Xperia T.

Sony Corp itself posted a modest profit and is on the road to recovery after some heavy losses and is in the middle of a turn around.

The company saw sales in the Mobile Products and Communications division, including personal computing, increase by 112%, mainly due to the consolidation of the mobile business venture it shared with Ericsson communications.

The company is currently undergoing a restructure of its mobile arm, shedding 15% of it workforce and relocating its headquarters to Japan. The mobile division forecasts selling 34 Million smartphones for 2012.

Sony sold 8.8M Xperia smartphones in the quarter, ahead of RIM 7.7M, ZTE who sold 7.5M and HTC who sold 7.3M.

Samsung and Apple remain the top vendors.
