Power Outage Disaster Management of Oracle Database Server

It is not easy to manage power outage disaster but you can deploy some prior techniques to eliminate this issue for your 24/7 running Oracle database server.

Oct. 11, 2012 - PRLog -- Power outages are a common environmental failure experienced by most sites. A good practice is to have an agreement with the facility management to provide sufficient advance notice prior to a major outage. For example, at a client site, we have an agreement with the building management that provides us with at least 48 hours notice prior to an outage lasting 3 hours more. However, even such agreements are not totally guaranteed to prevent random power failures. Hence, there is nothing like a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) system with the required capacity to take over during intermittent power failures and prevent disruptions. Any site requiring serious high availability database access ought to make the investment in buying robust UPS systems for all their data centers. Like other hardware, these UPS systems should also be well protected within locked cabinets, with very few people like UPS technicians having access to them. The electricity outlets should be out-of-reach of most people. The last thing you want is someone accidentally or intentionally switching off your power and UPS systems.

High availability solutions to withstand natural or man-made disasters can get very expensive. Geographically replicated data centers including hardware and software via geo-mirrors may ensure database availability during disasters. As mentioned earlier, it is important to evaluate whether availability is still desired during natural or man-made disasters. During a war, for example, availability may not be required. However, the answer to this question eventually depends on the scope of operations of the company and its market. For example, if the market for a product or service sold by the company exists beyond the affected geographical area or the company has branch offices in countries not involved in the war or the company supplies key defense equipment, the company many have to remain operational even during a war. This analysis should be done fairly early and integrated into the service level agreement.

We cannot able to restrict power outage kind of disaster but we can able to deploy some survival techniques. Using this kind of techniques, we can survive our database server up to certain time, for example, if we have UPS limit 4 hours then we can bring up our database servers for 4 hours during power failure. During this UPS switching, we can switch down all monitors for saving more UPS power or bring down non important database server which are not running 24/7 environment. This is best technique to use UPS appropriately.
