Halloween makes every NYC dentist cringe. Sweet treats are everywhere. Trick or Treat makes it easy for little ones to load up on all of their favorite goodies. All of that sugary candy sticking to children’s teeth is a breeding ground for bacteria and cavities.
This year the American Dental Association is embracing the spirit of Halloween in its new children’s dental care campaign against the sticky sweet side of the festivities. The campaign “Stop Zombie Mouth” is not only evoking Halloween fun, but also the recent craze of zombies and the hypothetical zombie apocalypse.
So what is zombie mouth? According to the offical website, “Zombie Mouth is gross: toothaches… cavities… rotten gums… even deadly diseases! It’s caused by the Putrid Posse — D.K., Plak, Rott, and P.U.
Together, they team up to tear down teeth and gums and leave your mouth pretty disgusting. Naturally, the Zombie isn’t worried about his health — but it’s not too late to save others!”
The website is also full of fun games and activities for children, including coupons for a downloadable Plants vs. Zombie games. This is the hit family friendly game from Popcap. There are also masks and coloring pages offered as a halloween treat that won’t cause tooth decay.
East Harlem Dentist in NYC will be passing out limited edition Plants vs. Zombie trading cards with codes for the free game. This is part of the American Dental Associations attempt to offer a different kind of Halloween treat.
Although the spin is lighthearted and fun, tooth decay is no laughing matter. It is the most common chronic disease in America and the numbers are on the rise. It is important for proper dental care begin at a young age so that it becomes a good habit into adulthood.
There are plenty of ways to combat zombie mouth. It is important to brush two times a day, and as much as you dread it, flossing helps get rid of the plaque that can’t be reached with a toothbrush. Replace sugary sweets with fruits as a healthy snacking alternative. Always wear a mouthguard and never pierce any part of your mouth. And if you needed another reason not to smoke, consider this one more.
This Halloween you will see a major effort from the East Harlem Dental Plaza to protect the teeth, gums, and mouths of our youth. Trying to take away candy without replacing it with something just as fun would never work. The “Stop Zombie Mouth” campaign offers an exciting alternative to those sugary, sticky, cavity causing treats.
