The October Stair Tread Sale comes in the wake of recent reports that indicate slip-and-fall accidents are the largest yet most easily prevented cost for American businesses. One such study has been published by global insurer Liberty Mutual.

By the Numbers: Top 10 Causes of Disabling Injuries in 2009
Each year, Liberty Mutual releases the annual Workplace Safety Index. The report identifies the top causes of non-fatal accidents that happen in American workplaces each year, and it provides estimates of the financial costs suffered by businesses as a result. In an effort to remain unbiased and accurate, Liberty Mutual draws data from insurance claims, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the National Academy of Social Insurance.

Each year, businesses use to the Workplace Safety Index (WSI) to better understand the types of accidents that affect American businesses most. The WSI also provides a window through which trends, statistics, and other injury-related metrics are analyzed. Businesses that have been paying attention to Liberty Mutual’s annual reports may have noticed a single alarming trend: Workplace accidents are costing American businesses a fortune, a majority of which are “slip-and-fall” in nature.

In fact, the 2011 report indicates that employees were more likely to be injured in a slip-and-fall accident at work than they were driving to work in 2009. Specifically, an estimated 71.7 percent of all costs were incurred as the result of the top five injury categories, including “slip-and-fall”, “overexertion”, and “struck by object”. Third-most costly to American businesses in 2009 were “fall to lower level” accidents, which amounted to an estimated $5.35 billion in total cost burden.

Businesses do not need a report from an insurance company to understand the risks, both physical and fiscal, that come with dangerous workplace conditions. As fall begins to officially take-hold, American businesses are beginning to revamp their facility safety programs, goals, and products. This year, businesses are paying close attention to stairways, stairwells, and landing areas, recognizing that these areas are particularly treacherous when left uncovered.
