Sept. 14, 2012 - PRLog -- The City of San Leandro announced today that the San Leandro Public Library has been connected to the Lit San Leandro fiber optic loop, a development that will vastly increase Internet connection speeds for library patrons. The connection brings up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) of bandwidth, which will be shared by the San Leandro Main Library and the City’s three branch libraries.

An event to celebrate the “lighting” of the library’s fiber connection will be held on Monday, September 24 at 4 p.m. in the Karp Room at the Main Library. The event, which is open to the public, will feature a demonstration of the new connection speed and several opportunities for library patrons to test it out.

Everyone is Welcome!

“Although Lit San Leandro has been largely focused on serving and attracting businesses, the connection to our library system will be of tremendous benefit to the residents of San Leandro,” stated Mayor Stephen Cassidy. “State-of-the-art bandwidth at the library is going to provide a phenomenal community asset.”

Lit San Leandro will exponentially increase Internet connection speeds for all of the public access computers at the library. “Computer workstations at the library provide a critical resource for the community, particularly for residents who lack access at home,” explained Library Services Manager Theresa Mallon. “In recent years, as we’ve increased the number of public computers and added wireless Internet service, available bandwidth has been constrained and connection speeds have suffered. Now visitors to the library will be able to connect at incredibly high speeds.”

In conjunction with the Lit San Leandro connection, the City is also installing several new WiFi access points throughout the Main Library, making the facility far more attractive for meetings, conferences and special events. The library’s facilities are already very popular for community events, but the new connectivity will make them even more attractive for high-tech gatherings that draw a large number of participants, each with multiple WiFi enabled devices.

Lit San Leandro is a public-private partnership between the City of San Leandro and Dr. J. Patrick Kennedy, CEO of OSIsoft, LLC. Dr. Kennedy is privately funding the installation of the fiber loop in existing underground conduit owned by the City. The majority of the 288-strand, 11-mile loop is already in operation in San Leandro with plans in place to expand to nearly 20 miles around the city which is centrally located in the San Francisco Bay Area and embarking on a path of technology-led development.
