Marbella Hosts People Evacuated due to the Wildfire

This article talks about the evacuation which took place in Marbella due to the wildfire, then goes onto mentioning the fact that it hasn't affected tourism in Marbella.

Sept. 6, 2012 - PRLog -- During Friday morning, a fire spread on approximately 12 kilometers lead to the evacuation of thousands of people who live near Marbella, in southern Spain. The Spanish firemen had to fight a huge fire that burned in the Costa del Sol. One person died in this unfortunate event and several others were injured.

About 250 firemen have struggled to extinguish the wildfire that destroyed 12 hundred hectares of land and caused the evacuation of over 700 families near the Spanish resort of Marbella. About 500 families were preventively evacuated in Marbella. 200 families were forced to leave their homes from Ojen, which is a locality located near Marbella, but were able to return afterwards. Similar evictions also took place in Mijas, where several homes have suffered mild damages because of the fire.

Elias Bendodo, the chairman of the Malaga region, declared that the decision to evacuate so many families was taken on the grounds of precautionary reasons, not actual danger.

Hundreds of firemen were helped by military personnel, who were trained to intervene in emergency situations, and by around 30 aircrafts and helicopters especially equipped for incidents of this kind. The fire has spread relatively quickly because it was favored by low humidity, strong winds and high temperatures. The flames have affected large parts of the forest and a part of the vegetation from Sierra Negra.

The person who died because of this fire was a 78 years old man. He was British but he had lived on these Spanish lands for many years. His lifeless body was found near the Ojen locality. The intervention forces are still seeking for his wife, who presumably has accompanied him. The man and his wife were initially evacuated from their home, but they have decided to go back. This uninspired decision led to his death. Also, a few more people needed treatment for various wounds caused by the fire and by indirect sources.

Most of the country was affected by a significant heat wave during this summer. The Malaga region was not an exception. This fire has started near the town of Malaga and has quickly extended to the surrounding areas of Marbella. The flames did not reach the town of Marbella. This resort was never in danger because of this disastrous event. This is why most of the families were evacuated in Marbella and had to leave their homes.

Despite the fire, all the activities took place normally in Marbella, including the activities oriented to tourism. Marbella’s visitors are not in danger as long as they respect the rules imposed by the officials. The restricted areas do not comprise any points of interest for the tourists, so the offered standards are still met and the success of anyone’s vacation is still guaranteed.

Marbella is a famous resort, mainly because of its beaches and its luxurious vacation propositions. It is preferred by wealthy foreigners who choose to enjoy the high-class services during their holidays. It is also home to numerous individuals who have chosen it to spend their retirement years.
