An Introduction to RDMA Technology Short Course to be part of Bio-IT World Cloud Summit

Pre-Conference Short Course - An Introduction to RDMA Technology

Aug. 22, 2012 - PRLog -- Needham, MA – Cambridge Healthtech Institute announces a Pre-Conference Short Course; An Introduction to RDMA Technology. This Short Course will be taking place Monday, September  10, 2012 as part of the second  annual Bio-IT World Cloud Summit (September 11-13) at the Hotel Kabuki in San Francisco, CA.  For more information, visit:  http://www.Bio-ITCloudSummit.com

About An Introduction to RDMA Technology Short Course:

RDMA (Remote Data Memory Access) is an advanced networking technology for improving application performance and efficiency by allowing data transfers from virtual memory on one node directly to virtual memory on another node while bypassing the kernel. Using RDMA eliminates most network overhead, eliminates memory copies in the node and provides true parallelism between the user’s program and network transfers. This results in extremely low end-to-end latency, high network throughput and large reductions in CPU utilization, yielding very high application performance, exceptional scalability and significant reductions in overall system cost. RDMA is a dominant network technology in high performance computing and is now being adopted in environments such as clouds where latency, performance and scalability are important. The OpenFabrics Alliance (OFA) provides, under open source, a “verbs” interface that gives the user or the kernel complete and simple access to this advanced network technology. The first half of the short course provides an introduction to RDMA including insights into how this technology is applied in modern data centers. The second half will address RDMA from a software perspective including an overview of the APIs used by application programmers to access an RDMA network.

Instructors:
Paul Grun, Chief Scientist, System Fabric Works, Inc.

Robert D. Russell, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science, University of New Hampshire

Cloud and big data are the two megatrends of this decade. They will shape the way life science companies and research institutions build infrastructure and handle data, and they are leading to an era where “the data fabric is the next middleware.”

In this conference, we showcase how the Cloud will help new developers build apps to make effective use of petascale systems for a broad range of life science and engineering applications, and make it less of a time, cost and power drain.
