Aug. 20, 2012 - PRLog -- Beaverton, Oregon (August 20, 2012)–Pilgrim Lutheran School has officially announced being recipients of a Lorenz Family Foundation Trust Grant.  The $9,500 grant was awarded for a pilot project which will assess the effectiveness of iPads in the classroom, providing a mobile iPad lab, and upgrades to the school's wireless system.

Initially, it is expected that these tools will help middle-school students learn about opportunities for Christian service in Eastern Europe and around the world, as part of a social studies research project. But the technology provided by this generous grant will also reduce the pressure on the school’s other systems, allowing all of the school’s students greater technology access, and help to implement their recently adopted technology plan.

Grant recipients had to show that funds would be providing or enhancing opportunities for Christian Education.

“The theme of our submission was ‘Pilgrim Lutheran School: Inspiring Students for Learning and Service through Digital Technology,’” stated Chris Herold, Principal of Pilgrim Lutheran School.

“Technology use in the classroom can present particular challenges for Christian schools,” added Mr. Herold. “These schools may have limited resources for technology costs, concerns regarding internet safety, and questions about the role of digital devices as students seek to integrate their faith with their daily lives.  It is really exciting to consider the uses of these tools in our classrooms.  I can picture our students interacting with students from around the world as they learn about life in other countries; or using the iPads to plan local service learning projects with our Student Leadership class. The potential these tools provide for enriching our learning environment is staggering."

The pilot project will serve as a platform for developing the school’s best practices around technology use, and will identify challenges and obstacles related to the effective use of technology in the classroom.  Strategies and solutions adopted to address challenges will be documented to inform the development of PLS’ plan for technology as well as to share their lessons learned with other schools.

As a private school, PLS is funded through private tuition and volunteer efforts, and offers opportunities for student involvement in music, sports, in-house library and extracurricular activities.

Pilgrim Lutheran School is offering a 2012-13 tuition discount of 5% till January 1, 2013.
