Stretching back to his childhood, he escaped one close call after another. He was nearly burned to death as the ground beneath his feet caved in on an underground fire, nearly drowned at sea, narrowly avoided being cut in half by a huge bulldozer blade, was only a few seconds from being burned alive in an armoured vehicle, and escaped by a fraction of an inch from being crushed between two halves of a train, which was close enough to leave a greasy mark across his back.

As for flying, he fell from a helicopter, suffered a catastrophic engine failure in a light aircraft, was forced to land his Cobra glider in a field with a meter-high crop in the midst of a thunderstorm, and had a death-defying crash in a Discus at a launch failure. This man certainly keeps his guardian angel busy!
