Volunteer with North Jersey Masters at Ironman U.S. Championship

More than 3,000 athletes of all levels from Ironman professionals to first-timers will tackle the course that starts with a 2.4-mile swim in the Hudson River, followed by a 112-mile bike segment and ending with a 26.2-mile marathon through the Palisades, over the George Washington Bridge and finishing in Manhattan’s Riverside Park.

North Jersey Masters, a Ridgewood-based running club, is working one of the aid stations on the course, which will wind through the hills of Palisades Interstate Park and the Englewood Boat Basin. The athletes will need both refreshment and encouragement on the grueling Ironman marathon run. The station is in the Undercliff area of Palisades Interstate Park. Volunteers are needed to hand out fluids, energy gels, chicken soup, fruit, pretzels, and a good dose of spirit to the athletes. Runners will pass by the station four times before heading into Manhattan over the George Washington Bridge.

Inronman Triathlon Brings Crowds and Commerce to Region

Approximately 2,500 athletes from around the globe are expected to participate in the 2012 Ironman U.S. Championship with an expected economic impact of approximately $50 million for the tri-state area.

“We have been working for seven years to bring an Ironman to the metro area and it’s finally here,” said John Korff, organizer of the New York City Triathlon. “New York City and the surrounding tri-state community is a hotbed for triathlon, and we are thrilled to partner with Ironman and local officials to bring a new world-class race to the streets of New York and New Jersey.”

Athletes competing in the new annual race can qualify for the 2012 Ironman World Championship, taking place on October 13 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The 2012 Ironman U.S. Championship will offer 75 age group qualifying slots to Kona, more than any other North American race. Additionally, there will be a prize purse of $100,000 for distribution among the top professional male and female finishers.
