July 17, 2012 - PRLog -- In partnership with Jumpstart for Young Children and First Book, The Children’s Museum of Atlanta is hosting a Let’s Read, Let’s Move event on August 2, 2012 through The Corporation for National and Community Service’s summer initiative, United We Serve: Let’s Read. Let’s Move.

The First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, and Ms. Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation of National and Community Service, launched the summer phase of the President and First’s Lady call to service, United We Serve: Let’s Read. Let’s Move. The goal of the program is to create opportunities for Americans to use service as a tool to promote physical activity, healthy eating, and to prevent losing academic ground during the summer.

The event at The Children’s Museum of Atlanta will offer several opportunities for guests to participate in special kid-friendly movement activities as well as exciting book readings. Guest appearances include performances by Carmen Agra Deedy, an internationally known children’s author and storyteller, and Kazanetti4kids, a local quartet that pairs books with musical performances and will feature Carmen Agra Deedy’s newly released book Return of the Library Dragon. The Atlanta Falcons Cheerleaders will lead a fun physical fitness activity and guest Chef Damaul Mitchell will conduct a cooking demonstration to show children how to prepare healthy snacks.

At the event, pre-schoolers from participating child development centers will receive their own “mini home libraries” of four brand-new books. First Book will provide the books, while Jumpstart will provide new book bags for each child. In addition, Jumpstart will provide books for the first 200 children to visit the museum that day!

This unique event is a remarkable example of a strong collaboration among partners at the federal, national, state and local levels to leverage resources that promote and celebrate literacy and movement for all children. This event is significant as it increases public awareness of the importance of reading and exercising while showing kids that reading and healthful living is fun.
