Golf Course Architect Randy Russell of RussellGolf Design Wins 2nd In Renovation of the Year

Golf Inc. Magazine releases winners of Renovation of the Year Awards. RussellGolf Design (www.russellgolfdesign.com) receives 2nd for their renovation of Rayburn Country Golf Course, which is located in Brookeland, Texas.

July 9, 2012 - PRLog -- Early release of Golf Inc. Magazine ipad edition announced that RussellGolf Design’s Rayburn Country Golf Club received Second Place in its Renovation of the Year competition.  Rayburn Country Golf Course, which is located in Brookeland, Texas, placed above Third Place Pecan Hollow Golf Course by Weibring-Wolfard Golf Design and Pinehurst No. 2 by Coore/Crenshaw, which was given Honorable Mention.
Top nods were given to the Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club by Lohmann Golf Designs.  As the article highlighted, this was largely due to the engineering feats achieved to increase the capacity of the golf course to handle rains, which eliminated forced closings and revenue losses.

Randy Russell, American Society of Golf Course Architect’s associate member and principal of RussellGolf Design, has said that he is “very proud of what our team accomplished particularly with such a limited budget.”  “In taking Rayburn through its $2.7 million dollar renovation, we were given certain ‘musts’ by the owner, including a $1 million dollar new irrigation, as well as, other infrastructure items” noted Randy.  “So in order to create a cohesive look between the formerly disjointed nines originally designed by Robert Trent Jones and Jay Riviere, Bill [Hanna] and I focused on new tee and green complexes with new smaller, clustered bunkering.”  “We were able to achieve a very dramatic look with only 25,000 square feet of bunkering, which eliminates the use of a mechanical trap rake and the normal issues of turf wear at the entry and exit points and risk of damaging the bunker liners,” said Randy.

Since opening, Rayburn Country Club has received exceptional reviews according to head pro Paul Calame.  Randy says that he was the most excited by comments on the “variety of shots they get to make in a round” and how that makes [playing Rayburn] “a truly fun experience.”

In March, Rayburn Country Club hosted an Adams Pro Golf Tour Series tournament.  With a winning score only 12-under par for the 72 hole tournament, Randy said that “this meant that the course held its own against some of the country’s better golfers.
In fact, recent Adams Pro Golf Tour Series winner, Michael Arnaud, was quoted in the Port Arthur News as saying:

“I’d heard many good things about Rayburn Country since the redesign and it all proved to be on target.  The other players were thoroughly impressed. They turned that into a great golf course.  It’s probably in the top three we’ll play. I just thought they did everything right from that magnificent clubhouse to a layout that really makes you think about the shot you are going to hit.  The routing was basically the same as the old course, but there are a lot more bunkers, the fairways are terrific and the greens have a lot more undulation.  If you miss to the wrong part of the greens, you really get penalized.  To turn what they had into that is a huge credit.  I would think it will be a regular stop on the Adams Tour for years to come.”  West, Bob (2012, May 15).  Makeover turns Rayburn Country into golf gem.”  The Port Arthur News.  Retrieved from http://www.panews.com.
