June 20, 2012. Monterey, CA. The community is invited to a fun free “edutaining” event about Monterey’s own Gold Rush! The Friends of the Monterey Public Library will present “1849 Monterey Gold Rush Day” on Sunday, July 15, 2012 from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM at the Monterey Public Library, 625 Pacific Street, Monterey (831-646-5632). Free for the whole family, there will be music, exhibits, educational programs, giveaways for kids and adults, snacks and refreshments. In addition, $5 opportunity drawing tickets will still be on sale during the event with final drawings at 2:45 PM to support the Monterey Public Library and possibly win one of four 2012 U.S. solid Gold Eagle Proof coins (1st prize – 1 oz; 2nd prize ½ oz; 3rd prize ¼ oz; 4th prize 1/10 oz – and gold is currently valued at over $1600 per ounce). The event’s schedule is as follows:

Ongoing Entertainment:

•         Mandolin/Banjo duo - "Gene Mason and Dave Holodiloff" of Microtonic Harmonic
•         Kids Gold Rush Arts and Crafts with Larisse Baker  

Ongoing Exhibits:

1:00 – 3:00 PM            
•         California Gold Rush History Story Board
•         Ghirardelli Chocolate’s Gold Rush History Story Board and chocolate samples
•         Miners cooking display, copies of old recipes given out to adults
•         Minerals display and gemologist

Beginning May 1, 2012, the Monterey Public Library Friends (www.mplfriends.com), a 501(c)(3) non-profit, Federal Tax ID#91-1976593, have been  selling $5 donation raffle tickets at a variety of locations in Monterey County, including the Monterey Public Library and Old Monterey Farmers Market (see list at www.mplfriends.com) which will conclude on July 15th. Donors who purchase these raffle tickets are supporting an important community organization and also have the opportunity to win one of four 2012 U.S. solid Gold Eagle Proof coins (1st prize – 1 oz; 2nd prize ½ oz; 3rd prize ¼ oz; 4th prize 1/10 oz – and gold is currently valued at over $1600 per ounce).  The drawing will be held at a special Monterey Public Library event on Sunday, July 15, 2012 at 2:45 PM at the Monterey Public Library, 625 Pacific Street, Monterey, CA 93940 and donors need not be present to win.
