June 20, 2012 - PRLog -- NEW LONDON, CT – Quantum Discovery was recently tasked to assist a Top 100 Law Firm on a substantial e-discovery project and document review.  The dataset contained approximately 415GB of email and network data, estimated at approximately 2 million records, and had a very aggressive production timeframe.  After running a date filter and de-duplication the collection was reduced to a universe of 1.3 million records.  The case team realized that even with the traditional search term approach there wasn’t the available budget, let alone time, to conduct a standard document review.

Quantum Discovery suggested to the Litigation Support Manager and Joe Eaton, Partner and Vice Chairperson of the Litigation Department, that the case team should consider utilizing Lateral Data's Viewpoint TAR (Technology Assisted Review).  Due to recent court rulings and articles associated with the benefits and advantages of predictive coding, Mr. Eaton decided to proceed using TAR.  “We were looking for ways to save our client money while providing an accurate and reliable document review in a short time frame and thought this new technology being utilized by Quantum may provide a favorable vehicle to do so,” said Mr. Eaton.

Working closely together, the Quantum team and Mr. Eaton’s staff reviewed multiple seed sets of documents.  Lateral Data's Viewpoint Technology Assisted Review system builds an ontology, learning from the reviewer the difference between a responsive and nonresponsive document.  Once the ontology is “statistically stable” the system can predict the calls on the rest of the collection.  In this case that was approximately 800,000 records.  Once the system predicts these values for the data set, the review team reviews the results via multiple iterations of statistical sampling and profiling to achieve a defensible result.  “The cost savings involved in avoiding a linear review was staggering. It’s not all in the technology, though, it is still the people and process that makes this work.  We were very pleased with the results,” said Mr. Eaton.
