Tungsten carbide has become one of the newest topics for Facebook page revolving around awareness and consumer advocacy against what the page creators consider to be a faulty product.

While considered a strong durable metal due to its scratch resistant nature, tungsten rings are actually made of tungsten carbide – a compound created by tungsten and nickel, turning it into a ceramic and making it very brittle. These scratch-resistant rings are often marketed as being indestructible within jewelry stores but after the rings have been fatigued – often just from daily use – the rings can break, shatter, and crumble. Consumers have reported breaking rings just by dropping them accidentally against a tile floor, banging hand inadvertently against a hard surface, and due to repeated vibrations from a lawn mower.

“Broken Promises,” the Facebook page created by a dissatisfied and distraught bride who’s husband’s ring broke, serves as an educational source for brides and grooms who have yet to realize how brittle a material tungsten carbide is. The creators of the page are also hoping to raise awareness over what they consider to be false advertising within the jewelry industry. James Vacey, expectant father and husband of 3 years recently split his wedding ring in two while playing softball. “I couldn’t believe it, my beloved wedding ring broke so easily. This is evidence of poor quality and misrepresentation of a product that was supposed to last forever.”

This Facebook page is one of a number of Facebook pages and Twitter campaigns that have been created by ordinary consumers in order to create awareness and promote consumer advocacy. It is only one example of social media’s ability to connect people from all over the world and provide a unified voice for those supporting the same cause.
