Armless Iowa Archer Secures Spot on London 2012 Team USA

FAIRFIELD, IOWA, April 30th, 2012 - Born without arms, Matt Stutzman would have to be considered by most to be an unlikely sports hero, but on Saturday afternoon the Fairfield, Iowa native once again demonstrated that for those who truly believe, anything is possible. Narrowly missing a world record setting performance, Stutzman dominated the 2012 Paralympic Archery Trials and secured his spot in the upcoming London 2012 Paralympic Games.

"I'm speechless, and for anyone who knows me...that never happens," said an emotional Stutzman. "I can't say I never imagined it, because I did. I believed I could do it, but it's an incredible feeling to make it official and I'm so grateful to so many people for giving me this amazing opportunity."

Remarkably, less than a year ago Stutzman was a relative newcomer to competitive archery, having competed for the first time internationally at the 2011 Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico in November. Incredible patience and determination, honed over a lifetime of learning even the most basic everyday tasks, has prepared Stutzman well for the intense concentration and repetitive excellence demanded in elite level archery.   Stutzman led the competition from start to finish falling a mere two points shy of a world record (699 out of a possible 720 points) in the double 70 meter ranking round and finishing with 19 out of possible 21 overall points. Over the course of the event Stutzman set two new national records.

"I want to thank my Mom and Dad, and my brothers and sisters for always treating me like someone 'who can' instead of someone 'who can't', and my wife and boys for believing in me, everyday, no matter what I dream up. And thanks to my sponsors too, who have treated me like a professional athlete, allowed me to provide for my family, and given me this platform to help people look beyond disabilities to see what's possible."

Stutzman has returned to Iowa where he will continue to train in preparation for the London 2012 Paralympic Games which begin August 29th.
