How Backpacks Transform Communities

May 5, 2012 - PRLog -- [Sylmar, Calif.] – On May 5th, a local charity, Children’s Hunger Fund (CHF), launched a summer-long drive, collecting backpacks and school supplies for local children in need.

For many, summer is an exciting time—beach days, barbeques! But for some, summer presents unique challenges. Struggling families often rely on free or reduced school lunches to feed their children. Those meals come to a screeching halt when summer hits. Putting food on the table becomes more difficult, and spending money on school supplies becomes nearly impossible. Many students go back to school lacking confidence and the necessary tools for success.

Recognizing the looming need, CHF launched a campaign to help those children. May 5th marked the beginning of CHF’s summer-long Back-to-School Pak drive to collect new backpacks and school supplies such as pens, pencils, paper, crayons, and rulers. Over 100 excited volunteers gathered at CHF’s Sylmar warehouse to pack boxes for children in need, and to kick-off the summer by making the first contributions towards the Back-to-School Pak campaign.

“The best part of the day was playing in the beans,” said 5-year old volunteer, Carolina.
