Derrill's Race Donates $5,360 To The Easthampton Community Center

Road race's recent retirement benefits local community center's work .

May 3, 2012 - PRLog -- Derrill's Race would have celebrated it's 9th year this Sunday, May 6, 2012.  Earlier this year, however, the decision to retire the popular 5K benefit race was made. In its eight years, the 5K benefit race held on the Manhan Rail Trail in Easthampton donated over $100,000 to the Cam Neely Foundation For Cancer Care in memory of Detective Sgt. Derrill Stoddard of the Easthampton Police Department.  It also provided $11,000 in scholarships to local students, and helped the community repair a sinkhole on the trail by donating $14,000 toward the repaving efforts.

After paying expenses from last year's race and reserving funds for the 2012 Derrill's Race Scholarship, the race committee, under the leadership of race director, Dr. Shelley Wilton, searched for a way to allow the additional funds to do the most good in the community.  The Easthampton Community Center was chosen as the recipient of this final $5,360 donation.

"The success of the race has had everything to do with our wonderful local sponsors, participants in the race and those who wanted to remember Derrill.  We know he will never be forgotten and hope he would be proud of the race’s accomplishments," said Wilton.
